FOR A MOMENT, there was a stunned silence in the Rusty Spur, broken by Nancy’s emergence from the kitchen. “I just saw Betsy run out. What’s going on here?” She looked around in bewilderment.

Marshal Deakins stood up, his narrow gaze on Ben. “That temper’s gonna get you in a heap of trouble one of these days, cowboy.”

Ben bristled. “What’s that supposed to mean?’

Annabelle Kunkle slid from the booth where she’d been lunching with friends. “If you don’t know, Ben Cameron, then shame on you.” Her face beneath the carefully coiffed gray hair brimmed with outrage. “I may just have to mention this to your grandma next time I see her.”

Nancy stepped up nose to nose with the startled rancher. “What did you do to my niece?” she demanded. “So help me, Ben, if you’ve hurt her…”

“I never laid a finger on her,” Ben protested. “I gave her every chance to come up with a logical explanation. The way you people are acting—”

“Oh, we ain’t actin’,” Johnny King snarled. He’d recently started working part-time across the street at the service station, and gainful employment hadn’t done much for his personality.

Annabelle chimed in self-righteously. “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?”

Ben retreated a step. He was always ready for a fight, but something told him he had no chance of winning this one. He frowned. “What’re you people sayin’? That I was too rough on her?”

The angry chorus of assent that greeted that innocent remark swept away any lingering doubts; as far as this community was concerned, Ben Cameron had put his boot in it, big time.
